Reporting to the Vice President, Proprietary Technology & Innovation, the Director, Proprietary Technology & Innovation is a leadership role supporting Agrium’s innovation strategy and portfolio, as well as the commercial integration of acquired and licensed-in technologies/intellectual property into its proprietary businesses including Loveland Products, Seed, and Wholesale. This position will be based out of Calgary, Alberta or Loveland, Colorado.

 

Key Tasks:

  • Strong contribution to the development, and execution, of commercial innovation strategies and initiatives for application of proprietary technologies originating from internal R&D efforts, equity investees and other business partners into our commercial businesses.
  • Contribute to business development opportunities to optimize Agrium’s innovation portfolio, gain access to new technologies, and accelerate commercialization efforts through acquisition, development agreements and other commercial partnerships.
  • Interface with key functional groups and business leaders and will have accountability for developing, implementing, and managing Agrium’s technology commercialization process across our innovation platforms to manage internal and equity investment projects, as well as 3rd party technology diligence.
    Assessing and prioritizing innovation spend, capital/operational budgeting, identifying commercial synergies, and intellectual property consideration.
  • Support the development and communication of Agrium’s broader innovation strategy, as well as the execution of key strategic objectives.
  • Support the analysis, development and execution of a multi-pronged technology commercialization strategy across the innovation portfolio, including the evaluation of existing and alternative channels to market to maximize the value of Agrium’s proprietary technology portfolios. 
  • Assess internal innovation pipeline and analyze key technologies with potential for commercial application, working closely with Agrium proprietary commercial and technical teams.
  • Key role in technology and innovation investment analysis, deal structuring, negotiations and cut-over / integration planning and execution.
  • Key member of the IP strategy team evaluating and prioritizing patent, trade secret, and other IP considerations across proprietary technology portfolios and investments.

  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of Agrium’s products, services and solutions across the global organization and how they contribute to strategy. Uses customer, supplier and market trends to provide innovative product, service and solution offerings. Examines industry practices, new developments and trends with a focus on future business possibilities. Reaches out across business units and corporate functions to sustain collaboration on complex issues that results in synergies.
  • Seeks out relevant details, considers implications and includes impacted stakeholders before making decisions. Makes sound decisions in complex/ambiguous situations. Decision making reflects critical and creative thinking. 
  • Decisions demonstrate a balance between timeliness and other variables (e.g. safety, sustainability, stakeholder needs). Decisions demonstrate collaboration and consideration of both strategy and tactics.
  • Determines and implements opportunities within own area of influence to optimize shareholder value. Implements effective ways to provide exceptional customer service. Incorporates process improvement best practices from other parts of Agrium and industry to raise standards of performance. Generates and brings forward ideas to grow the business of Agrium.
     

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Business Administration.   MBA, Finance, and/or Accounting Designation strongly preferred (i.e. CPA, CFA, CA or related.
  • 10+ years of broad and progressive experience in the agriculture industry. 
  • Experience in mergers and acquisition diligence and integration, and/or innovation or corporate strategy development and execution preferred.
